Improvements demanded by the City of Montreal are continuing at two rundown buildings in Cote-des-Neiges-NDG, but tenants say major problems persist.
An exterminator returned to the mouldy, vermin-infested buildings at 4837 and 4855 Vézina St. on Thursday, while other workers were removing asbestos.
Officials ordered the repairs following media reports two weeks ago about the dire state of the buildings.
But despite the progress that has been made, tenants say they're not hopeful.
"It's deplorable. … I am ashamed when my friends come around," one tenant said.
"The cockroaches are runnin'. The mice is runnin'. You're on your bed — roaches on your bed. A roach bit my neck. It's not fair to us."
The woman, who didn't want to give her name, said an exterminator came about two weeks ago, but the problems with vermin persist: "I know they're telling the city that everything is resolved, but it's not resolved — nothing."
Down the hall, Sritharan Sivasubramaniam is living without heat.
Sivasubramaniam said he had to send his two children to live at a friend's house because his apartment is too cold.
But the building manager says work is well underway. Emile, who would only give his first name, said all the asbestos has been removed from the lobby.
"Extermination is being done, and we're following up with more extermination today [Thursday]" he said. "This is the final."
Borough officials from Cote-des-Neiges-NDG could not be reached for comment, but they did issue a statement saying they are keeping a close eye on Robert Sebag, the landlord of the buildings.
Comments: Roach extermination should be done on where the infestation is sourcing from. Exterminating roaches at a visible part of the house is just only the first part of the roach extermination process. Afterwhich, roach exterminators should continually search where the breeding part of the roaches are located. The residents should see to it that they can call a roaches exterminator that is near to their place.
